FAQs - ZAB Degree Recognition

What is a Statement of Comparability?

The Statement of Comparability is an official document issued by the ZAB (Central Office for Foreign Education).

It confirms how a foreign university degree compares to a German degree and explains its possible professional and academic use in Germany.

It is not a formal recognition or license to practice, but it can be very helpful when applying for jobs, visas (e.g., EU Blue Card), or professional procedures.

What information does the Statement contain?

The Statement:

•States which German qualification your degree is comparable to

•Provides information on further study options and legal use of academic titles

•Explains the relevance for professional recognition

It is issued in two versions (sent together):

•Short version – for job / visa applications (attach to application documents)

•Long version – for cases where more detailed information is required

➡️ Please note: this statement does not create a legal entitlement (e.g., to practice a regulated profession).

How much does it cost?

•First statement: 200 EUR

•Each additional statement (e.g., second degree): 100 EUR

How long does it take?

Regular application: approx. 3 months

Fast-Track Procedure for Skilled Workers: approx. 2 months

Required for EU Blue Card: approx. 2 weeks

What are certified copies?

A certified copy is a photocopy of a document with an official confirmation that it is an exact copy of the original.

It must contain:

•A note confirming it is a true copy

•The official stamp / seal of the certifying authority

•The signature of the certifying official

✅ Acceptable authorities: local municipality, city administration, county office, notary, etc.

❗ Never send a copy of a certified copy. Only submit the certified copy itself.

❗ Do not submit original documents.
